Cultivation

In Karnataka, Arecanut is cultivated as a garden crop whereas, in Kerala, except in Kasargod and Cannanore Districts it is grown in almost all the tracts of land adjoining the paddy fields or coconut gardens. However in recent times, due to the dependable price of Arecanut, scientific farming is undertaken in Kerala, Karnataka and Assam. Adequate and regular supply of plant nutrients is essential for the proper growth and yield of Arecanut.

The Arecanut palm thrives well in areas with heavy rainfall with a well marked dry season. A point to be noted is that due to the high rainfall, the soil may get severely eroded and as a result very poor in plant nutrients. Thus judicious application of fertilizer and organic manures is necessary for Arecanut plantations as the tree cannot withstand water logging.
